THE SALT & THE TRADITION

An ancient sea.
A ritual still shared.

Beneath Transylvania

Long before the landscape we know today, an ancient sea covered this region. As its waters evaporated millions of years ago, they left layers of salt beneath what is now the Transylvanian Basin. Hidden within the earth, these deposits connect today’s salt landscapes to a world long past.

Time in the water

Salt bathing has a long history in Romania. At Sovata, people used salty springs and lakes for baths before the eighteenth century; public baths followed in the nineteenth. That tradition inspires our own invitation: share warm water, conversation, and unhurried moments—or enjoy a little quiet time to yourself.

A world below ground

Visits to Romania’s underground salt chambers reveal another side of the story. At Salina Turda, mining is documented as far back as 1271, and the former mine opened to visitors in 1992. Vast chambers and an underground lake make the region’s salt heritage something you can step inside and experience.

Transylvanian Grey brings the spirit of this tradition into your own bath. Make time for yourself, for the people you know, and for the conversations that turn unfamiliar faces into familiar ones.
